Our traverse climb of Mt Talinis was conducted on April 8-11, 2009. I was notified by lynette of the Mountain climbing activity through the bulletin she posted on the friendster page. We were guided by Sir Lito and Don2 his son. Many thanks Sir Lito and Don! For me, the real highlight of Talinis is the mystical maribuhok trees that literally scaffold the trail between Lakes Yagumyum and Nailig. I was awed by the clouds and fog formations in Lake Nailig. The sounds of the cricket at night and the pure water we drank from the lake Nailig amazed me more. The views we get on the trail are superb! Brilliant formations of the mountains and there was a quick sand, it was formerly a lake but turned into a quick sand. There was twin falls, you have to be there to really appreciate it. The water was cold as ice and not all of us had the nerve to be immersed.

The Holy week was approaching and i did not yet have a plan what to do on the vacation. My options were, island hopping and take underwater shots in the fish sanctuary, go to my Home town in Iligan, Audio Recording at Home, continue writing my guitar music book, Mastering the audio tracks of my sister and mountain climbing for 4 days in Mt. Talinis. After i decided on the latter option. I bought the necessary items like portable stove, cookset, and supplies with my mom. I weighed my bag and it was about 25-30 Kg.it's more than half of my body weight! My northface bag was already heavy with the internal aluminum frame and my tent, sleeping bag, camera D80, underwater case and airtight case for the camera addded to the total mass. I tried it in my back and started walking at our treadmill for about 10 minutes. I felt the weight was fine. so i kept all the things inside my pack. The next morning 5:30am i went biking all around mactan island for physical conditioning, it took me 1.5 hours to complete the 33 km perimeter distance of the island and home at 7am. I thought i still have one more day for preparation but a text message came that the climb will start the next day (wednesday 040809). Assembly was in Humay2 SDA church at 8:30. We departed for south bus terminal at 10am. I will post the itinerary here:

5am wake up time 6am cooking time and worship 7am breakfast and packed lunch. 9am we left lake nailig for the ranch campsite near the twin falls. Clem volunteered to carry my tent and i appreciated the weight loss of my backpack. 12nn we arrived at the sulfur vent and river. where there were many dead trees due to the sulfur and i guess lava activity in the area bacause the trees surrounding the area were burned. The odor was like rotten egg. we ate our lunch there a little away from the reach of the rotten odor. 1:30pm we arrived at the ranch campsite. Then we went to the twin falls leaving Sir lito alone in the campsite with all of our things. Many took a bath in the falls. very cold water. I only took pictures. 3:30 pitch tent and prepare dinner and worship. Fog came very low and covered us in thick white blanket. The scenery around is very nice. You can loudly hear the sounds of the forest. 6am sleep. and the battle of fart broke out until morning.

The itinerary above can be used by anyone planning to make adventure to Mt Talinis but dont forget to invite me, i might come.

On the trek going home, the descent was less axhausting than on the way up climbing slopes ranging from 60-80 degrees. It was truly a challenging climb and strenous. I used my 4 drive wheel even my 2 elbows was not spared in climbing over logs and crawling under holes.

I used all my techniques in rock climbing. Heel hook (shoes hook), drop knee (transfer weight), stabilize footings first, one cannot afford to be injured and especially when you have a heavy load, one is very susceptible to ankle injury with one mistake on footings. In rising from the ground, carry your weight using your two feet. step with one leg, drop knee and bring up the other leg before you stand up. that way the load will be distributed between your 2 legs. using only 1 leg will tire and fatigue your feet sooner. use hand if necessary to pull you up, grab branches or roots and pull up, make sure you have hands protection for thorns. Or you can use hands to pivot the load before standing - from crawl position.

Hiking techniques is very useful here. Take care of your heart. Dont let it beat irregulary with high peaks. closely monitor your heartbeat. It must be steady and beats are regular. For low gear or very sloped trail, inhale and exhale every step made. left foot - inhale, right foot exhale or vice versa. for less slopy trail one can use 2 steps per inhale or exhale. 2 steps - inhale, next 2 steps exhale. then the high gear lets you take 3 steps per exhale and inhale actions but you may carry a walking stick to help you prevent a fall in case your foot hits something which may cause you to stumble. Take extra care always to avoid ankle sprains.

Mountain climbers knows best how to take care and preserve nature at its virgin state. Never wash you dishes in the lake, take water from the lake and wash dishes away from it. burry the leftover food. you may not build a latrine but always burry your disposal under the earth away from sources of water. carry garbage down the mountains. And observe the climbers motto. leave nothing even footprints (step on hard surfaces, it may save you from hitting your buttocks to the ground), take nothing but pictures, kill nothing and no one. And carry back everything you brought and bring any plastic garbage down to conserve the environment.
